The boys were in 5th and 4th grade when they were on the USA Prepares Show. They remember bits and pieces of the experience.
The boys didn’t have much experience talking on the phone, so the idea of talking on the phone to a radio program was new. They were nervous each time, but were interested in the answers that Rick gave. We would discuss them in more detail after the show.
What did you learn from the experience? “I remember learning about the layers of the atmosphere,” Mason. “I remember talking about radio waves,” Matthew. Mostly the boys learned to formulate questions, ask them and listen to the answers.
Funny thing, Mason has always been very against consuming caffeine. He always thought it was me (mom) telling him, but I remember it was after he heard Dr. Shealy describe the affects caffeine has on the body of a young child. After that show, he began to ask if various drinks had caffeine, and if they did, he wouldn’t drink it.
Did the experience change your outlook on the field of science? No. they knew that science was interesting, but up until then their only experiences with science were mostly experiments. So, this was their first time hearing theory that would sometimes match up with the experiments they had performed.
